From RMS Studies to Detailed EMT Simulation,
Toward Digital Twins for Power Equipment
Power systems increasingly depend on power electronics and complex controls.
We complement RMS studies with EMT simulation to investigate fast transients and control interactions,
developing power equipment digital twins validated against field data.
01 · RMS
System-Level Dynamics
Study fundamental-frequency voltage, frequency, and system dynamics
02 · EMT
Fast Equipment Responses
Examine instantaneous waveforms, electromagnetic transients, and control responses
03 · DIGITAL TWIN
Connecting Physical Systems and Models
Compare data, calibrate models, and validate operating scenarios
WHY EMT ANALYSIS
More Equipment Requires Analysis of Fast Phenomena
RMS dynamic studies efficiently assess fundamental-frequency responses in large power systems. EMT analysis complements these studies when detailed waveforms matter, including fast inverter, HVDC, and grid-forming control responses, switching transients, and harmonics.
Power Electronics and Control Interactions
Use detailed models to investigate how inverters, HVDC systems, and grid-forming controls interact with the grid.
Instantaneous Responses to Switching and Faults
Analyze short-duration voltage and current waveforms, including switching overvoltages and inrush currents.
Scenario Validation Before Field Demonstration
Compare responses under different operating conditions and control settings, and define what to verify during testing and demonstration.
RMS and EMT studies are used together according to study objectives and timescales. The reliability of EMT results depends on model detail, input data, and validation.
WHY DIGITAL TWIN R&D
Refine Design Models to Reflect Real Equipment
Equipment responses depend on operating state, control settings, and environmental conditions as well as design values. This makes comparison with field and test data, and the calibration of model parameters, essential parts of development.
Collect Field Data
Organize measurements, test data, equipment specifications, and operating conditions.
Compare and Calibrate Models
Compare measurements with simulation results and validate the model’s range of applicability.
Support Design and Operating Decisions
Use validated models to compare proposed improvements and operating scenarios.
Real-time data integration, coupled electrical and thermal models, and condition assessment functions are developed in stages to match the equipment and R&D scope.
